We had a longer drive than normal, ahead of us today but
nothing too outlandish. The first part of our journey took us on many roads
that had been affected by the recent rains. We crossed flood ways with large
amounts of water running through them and many other areas where water was
lying across the road. The conditions of the roads did not impinge on our journey,
so all was good. We had a stop for lunch at a small service station in the
middle of nowhere which happened to have fuel at a much cheaper price than anywhere
else. It was very busy due to this! We arrived at Clairview and our new caravan
park, which is just of the Bruce Highway and located on the beach. I was fascinated
by the name “Barracrab” but it probably is due to the fact that this is a
popular fishing area and there must be crabs around too! We had read that the
meals at the restaurant/bar here, located on the beach front were excellent and
so book in for dinner. The town of Clairview is just a long strip of homes
located on the beach front. Many would be holiday homes but there are a few permanent
residents. Rob and I went for a walk
along the esplanade hoping to reach the end of the residences but returned to
the car so we could complete this excursion. Just off the coast is a dugong sanctuary.
You can see the dugongs from shore on a
clear, calm day and it’s very easy from a boat or kayak. This all sounded great
until we saw the “Achtung” sign warning of crocodiles! Won’t be going near the
water. There was other good news as the temperature was up to 27 today and the
skies were clear so we were pretty happy with that.
