Day 53 Friday 16th Finch Hatton Showgrounds, A Pretty Perfect Day!

After a magnificent dinner of barramundi, overlooking the sea, last night, we woke to a beautiful day. The sea was a gorgeous turquoise and calm. As we drove to our next destination we enjoyed great scenery of lush, green forests, farms and the busy cane-fields. Cane was being harvested and we needed to watch out again for the long cane trains. We had a brief stop at the pretty cane town of Sarina for shopping and coffee, before reaching our next destination, Finch Hatton. The only caravan park here is at the Showgrounds and we cannot be disappointed at all. There are huge grassed areas, trees, clean amenities and this plus power and water, for $25 a night. Cattle Creek runs behind the showgrounds and it’s a lovely spot to relax and walk. The town is located in a valley and is surrounded by picturesque mountains. There is only one place that would compare to this, particularly the great facilities and the cost and that would be the caravan park at Mirani, another council run park that is set up next to the town’s swimming pool. It happens to be only 20 minutes’ drive away and we’ve booked in there for a couple of nights. After setting up we went for a very scenic drive up into the mountains in the Eungella National Park. The road was again very steep and windy but absolutely worth the drive through the magnificent rainforest. We visited several lookouts and enjoyed stunning views. We finished the drive with a visit to Broken River. Here we were treated to seeing several platypuses in the wild. Returning to the showgrounds I went for a walk. The wall along the entrance to the showgrounds has some lovely permanent art-work, done by students of the local school. There was also a whole wall of information boards about the history of Finch Hatton which of course I enjoyed viewing and reading. Oh and we were a little warm today as the temperature reached 30!
