Day 29 Tuesday 23rd Hastings Point, A Whale of a Day

Rob had thought he might play golf this morning so we headed to The Chinderah Golf Club, a 15minute drive north from Hastings Point. Rob chose this course because it looked pretty good and it was at least quarter the price (especially for seniors) of other clubs in the area. When we arrived it was obvious that the course was extremely popular by the huge number of cars in the park. Rob checked in at the clubhouse and found that there would be a wait and he also realised that it could be a long round of golf in that he may have been waiting awhile to play holes. Instead he opted to do some driving practise, purchasing 100 balls and enjoying hitting off the driving range. I explored the club area and watched a little of Rob practising his driving, before returning to the car to read. Once he’d finished, we drove to Tweed Heads NSW/Coolangatta Qld. We understood why during Covid, things must have been very difficult when the border between the two states is down the centre of the road! Anyway we stopped near Point Danger, surf beach for a walk and a coffee. We then had to do a little shopping in Tweed Heads area, before stopping at Cabarita Beach for grocery shopping and lunch. Here we walked across the road to Norries Headland to watch both the surfers in closer to the shore and the whales, further out. We saw many whales but we had left our binoculars back in the car. We were impressed by the display the many whales were putting on and so decided to return to the car and drive back to Hastings Point lookout and watch the whales there with the binoculars. We were not disappointed. There were many whales just lazing around, slapping their fins etc. A whale not too far out, did 4 dives in a row with its tail fin coming out of the water and I managed to actually get a photo of this with my phone! We returned to the caravan and Rob did some jobs around the van. I decided to return to the beach south of the headland, Cudgera Beach, for a walk. Once again I was lucky! I had taken the binoculars but hadn’t expected to see much as I was on the beach and not up high. Anyway, I was watching some whales playing when one of the whales lifted itself out of the water at least 4 times. The whale would launch itself into the air and at least half of the huge creature would be out of the water before, crashing back into the sea. No photos of this as I was too busy watching! I feel so fortunate to have been able to see this amazing sight while standing on the beach.
