Another beautiful day greeted us this morning so we did a couple of loads of washing before heading off on a driving trail into the hinterland to explore the many little villages. Our first stop was Tumbulgum a lovely place to unwind or have a picnic on the banks of a river. Two rivers, The Tweed and Rous meet here. I made an exciting discovery here. We saw a sign that said “Historic Tumbulgum Cemetery”. It was only a little way out of town although google maps made it more difficult than it needed to be. Initially I was very disappointed as all that seemed to remain of the “Historic Cemetery” was a sign located on the side of the road near a very thick rainforest area. I decided to have a closer look and notice some steps leading up the mountain. I was very confused but then read some info boards on the way that explained that back in 1870 a man granted some of his private land for a cemetery. Obviously it was uphill as being next to the river, it needed to be high enough to avoid floods. I suspect the land was cleared when the cemetery was there but having not been in use since the 1940’s, the rainforest has taken over. A group of people in the 1990’s restored the path to the cemetery and the graves are located in the middle of a rainforest. It was worth the steep walk up many steps to the cemetery. The graves are now in the middle of a peaceful, lush rainforest, surrounded by ferns, majestic trees with only the sounds of nature around. I could not think of a more peaceful place to rest. Anyway once back at the car, we headed to the larger town of Murwillumbah, stopped here for coffee and admired the art deco architecture, before driving to the delightful town of Chillingham and then on to Tyalgum where we stopped for a delicious lunch at the lovely cafĂ© and local produce store. We continued to Uki where we had a great view of the massive Mount Warning, towering above. Once back at the caravan I went for a good kayak on Cudgera Creek. I originally tried to kayak up the creek but the tide was at its lowest and it was hard going with me being stuck on sandbars. I then decided to head in the opposite direction towards the sea. This was much easier and good fun.
