Our journey today was only a 27 minute/32 Km drive north to Hastings Point. We were not able to get into our caravan park until 12 midday so we needed to stop off somewhere on the way up and go for a walk and a coffee. The quaint, seaside town of Pottsville seemed to be a perfect location for this. Can you believe when we arrived the centre of town was extremely busy and then we saw the reason why. Another market! These markets are held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month and we happened to arrive on the 3rd Sunday of the month. We had to park a long way away but the walk would do us good and help to while away some time. These markets were very impressive and more our style. Beautifully crafted wares, jewellery, clothing, lovely arts and crafts, fresh fruits and veggies etc. etc. One of the most intriguing and impressive stalls we saw was a “Retyred Furniture” stall. The quality of the furniture was outstanding and to be honest it looked amazing. Look it up on www.retyred.com if you’re interested! We purchased some macadamia nuts, some fruit and vegies and some interesting earrings. There were various food and drink vans here too but we decided to go for a walk down the main street and to find a cafĂ©. After enjoying our coffee stop, we stopped in at the local butcher and purchased a few things before walking back to the van. By now we were able to drive the short distance to our new park at Hastings Point and settle in. Hastings Point is a pretty, sleepy, little town located in the Tweed Heads area and relatively quiet compared to the bigger towns further North. There are rivers and creeks all around us and the beach is just across the road from the caravan park. In the afternoon we drove to the nearest Tourist Information Centre which was in the very busy town of Kingscliff. With the stunning weather and being the last day of the school holidays there were people out and about, eating at the fancy esplanade restaurants, swimming at the beautiful beaches or just enjoying the seaside parks. We called into the tourist info centre and a very helpful woman gave us lots of information about possible things to see and do in the area. We did some more walking before heading to Fingal Head which is where the Tweed River empties into the ocean. Using the binoculars, we were able to see a group of whales just playing out in the ocean. On our return to Hastings Point we observed many, many surfers in the water. The carparks near the beaches were full of cars. I really don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in the water surfing in one spot. Probably due to the excellent conditions and perfect weather.
