We decided to head into the hinterland today. Our first stop was the small town of Mullumbimby which must be the centre of alternative living in Australia. Being the 3rd Saturday of the month, there just happened to be a market on so we of course needed to visit. We may have stood out a little as our grey hair was not long and in dreadlocks and we weren’t wearing long caftans or tie-dyed apparel. Anyway, it was fun to walk around and observe the various stall holders and their wares. It was also a cheap visit as we didn’t part with any cash. From here we headed into the beautiful rainforest mountains. Again a windy, rough road but worth the drive for the glorious views overlooking the nearby mountains and coast and the magnificent, thick rainforest. Our journey took us through the Nightcap National Park with its sheer cliff walls and lush, green gullies and then on to the Rocky Creek Dam. This dam was opened in 1953 to supply water to the nearby towns like Byron Bay. We enjoyed going on some of the walks around this waterway and I even walked out on the spillway. From here we drove to the Minyon Falls Lookout. It was quite magnificent giving stunning views of the waterfall and rainforest. There was a walking path down to the base of the falls. The hike would have taken about an hour and ½ to get to the base and we suspect 4 hours (for us) to hike back! We enjoyed the views from the platform at the top. We returned to Brunswick Heads, calling into the “Bruns Bakery” for lunch. Returning to the van, I went for another lovely kayak, this time upstream in the Brunswick River and then into a lovely small and quiet creek. Being Saturday and beautiful weather, there were many small boats out, mainly fishing and setting pots. They didn’t seem to want to go down the smaller creek so my kayak it was quite peaceful and serene.
