Day 25 Friday 19th Brunswick Heads, An Active Day

The weather today was perfect. The sun was out and there was little or no wind so I had no excuse for not putting the kayak in the water. Rob assisted me and then he was off to the Mullumbimby Golf Course for a round of golf while I kayaked. While gathering all the kayaking gear out of the back of the vehicle I went to pull my life-jacket out of a crate. It seemed caught so I pulled a bit harder and then all of a sudden the CO2 cylinder in the jacket activated and the jacket blew itself up. This meant that it will need a new cylinder. Rob and I had to deflate the inner jacket and pack it back into the life jacket. I wore it anyway but it would not have been very useful if I had fallen in the water. I enjoyed over 2 hours of gentle paddling down to nearly the mouth of the Brunswick River and also exploring some of the smaller creeks that flow into the Brunswick River. The water was a hive of activity, with small fishing dinghies, larger boats heading out to the ocean and several very large boats heading out to do whale-watching tours. With the beautiful weather, there were many people and families out walking, some swimming, others fishing. I returned to the caravan park and locked the kayak up near the river, around a large tree. I’d only been back at the caravan for a short while when Rob arrived back from his round of golf. We had a quick bite for lunch and then headed out in the car to do some more exploring. We visited both the North Head walking track and then the Southern Breakwater walk. By visiting both we had an excellent view of the mouth of the Brunswick River and the nearby beaches. The main part of town was extremely busy again with the mix of young people and their vans with their beds in them and the higher end locals and tourists visiting the expensive shops and eateries. The Hotel Brunswick is a bit of an icon here, being sold in late 2021 for $68 million. It was built in 1940 in the art deco style. We had a drink there, just one because we couldn’t afford anymore. We returned to the van and I headed out in the kayak again to watch the sunset from the water. It was pretty and lovely and calm but not as spectacular as I had been hoping.
