After visiting the Information centre yesterday, we decide to go on a classic Clarence Valley drive. Our route took us from Grafton first to a small historic village of Ulmarra which was once a river port. The village was a treasure trove of antiques, art and craft shops and cafes. We wandered up and down the street and called into one of the galleries where we made a purchase of some glass art work…..now to get it home safely. We continued on to the Scottish town of Maclean. It seems that too much Scottish is not enough for this town with many of the power poles painted in different tartan patterns. We continued on with our drive, following the huge Clarence River, crossing it several times with bridges and once using a ferry. Sugar cane is grown in this area and were a little surprised about this as we didn’t realise that it was able to be grown so far south. There were also many farms with cattle on them too and some even had both!
Update, we are off to the pub (an old one on the Clarence River) for dinner tonight and to see how the locals enjoy tonight's decider of The State of Origin NRL match.
