Day 22 Tuesday 16th Grafton, Mountains and Rivers

Before I write about today’s adventures I must add to yesterday’s as I forgot an important place we visited. It seems that despite it being a travelling day, we did see and do quite a lot on the way! About 20kms out of Bingara (the sausage roll town), we came across the Myall Creek Memorial Site. This site was developed in 2000 by a group of Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people, in an act of reconciliation and as an acknowledgement of the many Aboriginal, women, children and old men who were killed by a group of squatters, convicts and free men, on 10th June 1838. We walked the 500m around the site which was well laid out and had information boards about the terrible incident. The area also had an amphitheatre and good facilities.

Our journey today took us through more mountains and beautiful scenery. We left Glen Innes in freezing conditions. The temperature was around 3 degrees but the predicted Antarctic wind blast made it feel like -2. The wind was to stay with us but at least by the time we arrived in Grafton, the actual temperature was 16. We travelled up through lush, mountainous rainforest which were part of several national parks. The road was very steep and windy so unfortunately there were few places where we could pull over to enjoy the amazing views. As we made our way down the other side of the mountains, we followed a valley that had a spectacular, wide but shallow river running through the middle of it. We arrived in Grafton around lunchtime and did some washing before heading out to explore. Grafton is very large town, located on the banks of the huge Clarence River, the largest river in Australia to empty into the eastern seaboard.  We visited the tourist information centre before exploring the main shopping strip of Grafton and the banks of the Clarence River. The town has two main bridges to cross the Clarence River. The older one is a double storey bridge with the cars driving on the narrow lanes above and the train line runs below. The other bridge is a large more modern one with two lanes each way for traffic. We are staying in Grafton South which is the older part of Grafton and the main shopping street here is known for its heritage buildings so I’m pretty happy.
