Day 37 Wednesday 31st Lake Somerset, Foggy but no Condensed Milk

This morning we awoke to a thick fog but very calm conditions out on the lake. The fog didn’t take long to lift so Rob assisted me to put the kayak in the lake and set off. It was a beautiful morning out on the water and the good conditions lasted for 2 hours. I saw turtles and all sorts of birds including some very attractive tiny wren like birds with red breasts. Once the wind sprung up, I’d been kayaking for well over two hours and I decided that was enough for the morning.  We returned to the van had some lunch and then decided to go for a drive to a small town called Toogoolawah. This town was described as an attractive, heritage town that has the Somerset Regional Art Gallery. The gallery and cultural precinct was housed in a building which was once home to Nestle condensed milk factory. This building had won all sorts of architectural awards due to the restoration and renovation work done to it to turn the old cannery into a gallery. Rob was hoping that there may have been some condensed milk there but no such luck. There was one of the unusual art instillations that featured tins of condensed milk but Rob thought he’d better not remove them. Another interesting sculpture on the grounds of the cannery was a beautiful, life-size, bronze statue of Norman, a red deer. In 1873 Queen Victoria gifted Queensland a herd of red deer and they were released in the area nearby Toogoolawah. Releases of the deer continued for another five years. Apparently you may still see their descendants roaming the area today.
