Day 12 Saturday 6th Blayney, An Icy Morning, Dreams of Cherry and Strawberry Pies and Rugby Union

Before I write about today’s adventures, I must comment on the apple pie. We had it for dessert last night and it was simply outstanding. (We didn’t eat it all and have left some for another time.) We awoke to -2 degrees this morning, although we were nice and cosy in the van! Outside it looked like a mystic fairyland with frost covering everything and fog coming off the nearby Tumut River. From Tumut we were heading to Blayney. Along the way we passed through rich and lush mixed farmland and also many towns we had never heard of. One of the towns was called Young. This was a very, large town and it was the centre of the cherry and strawberry growing area. Of course being Winter, it is not the time for cherries but we did see many stalls which when open in Summer, would sell cherry and strawberry pies. Just as well it’s not Summer! After setting up in Blayney, we went for a drive around the small town. It is another very historical gold mining town and had quite a few old buildings. Despite the sunshine, there was a bitterly, cold wind blowing so we stayed in the car. Located near the caravan park, was the local multi-purpose oval and as we drove past we noticed that a rugby union game was being played. We were able to park up, facing the oval and sat in the car and watched the game. I really struggle to understand it but it was a bit of fun! The game was a bit one sided with the Blayney Rams RFUC defeating the West Wyalong Weevils!!!! RFUC 45 to 5. (Who would call their team the Weevils?)
