Well after all the hail that hit West Lakes last night we
were glad to be on the road this morning. I can’t remember such a hailstorm in
all the years we’ve lived at West Lakes. Needless to say drains and downpipes
were quickly overwhelmed by the hail and our paved area outside soon resembled
a river. The good news was no damage was done to our home and more importantly
to the caravan, especially seeing it had recently been repaired due to water
damage. We had an uneventful drive to Renmark making the mandatory stop at the
Truro bakery for coffee and maybe something else. Although the weather was
certainly an improvement on the Adelaide weather, it is not really that conducive
to kayaking or golfing so we’ve decided to keep moving until things improve in
that area. We have tried a different caravan park in Renmark and have settled
in to the Riverbend Caravan Park. A beautiful, peaceful park on the river close
to the distinct Paringa Bridge. This
bridge may not mean much to many people but due to the fact that my Grandfather
and Great-Grandfather were here in 1927, when it was first opened and saw the
first steam train cross it, I am just a little bit interested. (Oh and it’s on
the State Heritage Register.) They took many photos and I recently discovered
them in a very old album belonging to my Grandfather. Of course it is now just
a narrow road bridge with the former railway line replaced by a pedestrian and
bike lane. We went for a lovely walk over the bridge and along the bank on the
opposite side to the caravan park. We saw some beautifully painted silos and
the nearby information board gave a wonderful insight into the characters on
the murals. The very eclectic and weird houseboat which is well known for
parking at spots on the river, close to Renmark, was docked across from the
park and we could hear music (Moon River) drifting across the river. We enjoyed
our walk and realised that an extra night here would be quite enjoyable so I
went and booked us in for another night.
